Voice Training

Modifying your voice to align with your gender identity is a powerful tool. It involves changing habits of pitch, resonance, and weight.

The Basics

  • Pitch: How high or low your voice is (frequency).
  • Resonance: The “timbre” or brightness of your voice. (Chest voice vs. Head voice).
    • Feminine: Brighter, smaller space (Head/Throat resonance).
    • Masculine: Darker, larger space (Chest resonance).
  • Vocal Weight: How “heavy” or “buzzy” the voice sounds.

Apps & Tools

  • Voice Tools (iOS/Android): Good for pitch tracking, but don’t rely solely on pitch. Resonance matters more!
  • Acoustic Gender.space: A web tool to visualize resonance and pitch.

For Transmasculine Folks

Testosterone will thicken vocal folds and drop your pitch, but “training” can help you settle into that new range comfortably and learn “masculine” speech patterns (intonation).

For Transfeminine Folks

Estrogen does not raise pitch. Voice training is the primary way to achieve a feminine voice.
